The Chocolate Chip Cookie
The Chocolate Chip Cookie
Chocolate chip cookies originate from America. It was first made by chefs called Ruth Wakefield and Sue Brides in late 1938. At the time Wakefield owned a popular restaurant in Massachusetts called the Toll House Inn. There are many rumours reporting that she made the cookie accidently and originally thought the chocolate chunks would melt but she stated that she made it with a purpose. When she created it she named it the Toll House cookie.
During WW2 soldiers from Massachusetts brought the 'Toll House Cookies' with them and shared them with other soldiers who were from all over America. Soon soldiers were sending letters to loved ones begging for these 'Toll House Cookies.' This is how the famous idea of the chocolate chip cookie spread.
When the cookies began to sell in shops, a copy of Wakefield's famous recipe was pasted on every packet for the whole of America to see.
There are now thousands of chocolate chip recipes out in the world all slightly different but based around the recipe that Wakefield published almost 80 years ago. For example some now add baking powder to make a more larger and round cookie or some allow the cookie dough to cool before cooking to make the nice a gooey in the centre.
