The fortune Cookie
The Fortune Cookie
Fortune cookies are a dessert mainly served in Chinese restaurants in America. They are sweet crisp cookies that have a piece of paper on the inside telling you something about your future. For example:
" Time heals all wounds. Keep your chin up."

They have no connection to China. There are some claims that the famous dessert was first made in
Japan in the 19th century, but there are some major differences in there fortune cookies to the American style ones we know. Some of the differences include a different size and different ingredients which make the Japanese ones less sweet and creates a darker dough.
The first modern version of the fortune cookie was reportedly served in San Francisco by Makoto Hagiwara who worked in a Japanese restaurant. The cookies were made by a local bakery. Although there have been claims that the first fortune cookie was actually made by David Jung who claimed he created the cookie in 1918 in his noodle shop. The dispute went to court and went in Hagiwara's favour.
So next time you are in America I advise you to try a fortune cookie to see what your future holds!
